Ronnie Burkett
Ronnie Burkett began experimenting with puppetry as a teenager in Alberta, and has apprenticed with such famous American puppeteers as Bil Baird, Martin Stevens and Frank Paris, as well as Canadian puppeteer Noreen Young. He started touring in 1975, appearing in nightclubs and theatres while also working as a puppeteer on television. In 1986, he established the Ronnie Burkett Theatre of Marionettes, with the aim of furthering appreciation of puppetry as a dramatic art. Burkett has presented many of his one-man marionette productions around the world to international acclaim. An accomplished playwright, his original works include Tinka's New Dress, Provenance and 10 Days on Earth. Burkett has received numerous awards from the United States, Australia, Canada and other countries for his marionette theatre presentations. Honours include a UNIMA-USA Citation of Excellence in the Art of Puppetry, the Age Critics' Award and the Dora Mavor Moore Award.
